EVER MEET AN HONEST MECHANIC?

Where you take your car for repairs is your choice. Having a recommendation can be helpful, someone you know might have a “Guy”, someone they trust. There are a few simple things you can do to boost your confidence in where you take your car for servicing. It’s smart to look around before you need any repairs, this gives you an advantage by having a plan, or direction in situations such as when your car needs work. Most people prefer to remain local since any drop off and pick ups are easier. A good start is to go out and look around at the local repair shop options near you and stop by. Speak to the people who work there, and what’s your impression? At Octane Garage here in Somerset, NJ, we adhere to standards that benefit both the shop and the customer, everybody wins. Wherever you choose to go, even if it’s another shop we believe you can and should reasonably expect the following:

A CLEAN, WELL MAINTAINED REPAIR FACILITY
For example, if the shop you visit is reasonably clean and the equipment they use appears to be well maintained, chances are good your car will be treated with the same care.

CLEAN, CLIMATE CONTROLLED WAITING AREA
If you need to wait awhile for your repair you should be reasonably comfortable in a well kept area, offering free wifi, TV, water, coffee, tea and treats.

YOU ARE ENTITLED TO A WRITTEN ESTIMATE
If you choose to, a quote will be provided detailing the diagnosis and what work is necessary. No work is ever done without the customer’s permission and approval. A written quote can be compared with other estimates, and ultimately it is your choice where you take your car.

CLEAR COMMUNICATIONS, QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Anything concerning something your car needs, or will need, will be explained, even demonstrated when possible. You should have an understanding of what is wrong and what needs to be done. You can ask to see the old part that was replaced.

RESPECTFUL AND FAIR TREATMENT
Friendly people who are interested in helping to solve a problem you're having, regardless of who you are. There are shops lately that are advertising themselves as being "friendly" to specific groups of people, for example "female friendly", etc.  No need to list all the different kinds of people, we all are equal when our car breaks down. Car repairs are a terrific equalizer, it makes us all just people with a problem to solve.

PAYING FOR A WARRANTY?

If you have purchased a used car recently, or answered your phone, you have probably been offered an extended warranty on your vehicle, which you pay extra for. The Credit Karma website posted a good article to read before considering such a program,  https://www.creditkarma.com/auto/i/extended-car-warranty. Many other warnings exist on the internet against the way many of these programs work, but this article covers most. Some repair shops refuse to deal with them entirely. If you still want to consider a plan, read everything, ask questions, and look up their reputation. We have seen customers who have purchased one, and when they attempt to have “covered” repairs done they are surprised to find out that there is only a portion, or a fixed amount they will pay toward the part/repair/labor. Sometimes they will only pay toward used parts, but not the hardware to install them. Any remainder is at the customer's expense. You can end up paying significantly more on a job that you believed was “covered” because their definition is different than most people understand when they sign up, They find out when they try to use the warranty. We recommend putting the monthly cost of the warranty in the bank. At least it’s still your money to use where, when, and if you need to. We offer honest written quotes, nothing performed without the customer's informed consent. Most of these policies are written and sold by a business that doesn’t earn it's money paying for repairs.
